Leading With Passion
“The goal of JMP is to make statistical modeling as friendly, accessible and informative as possible, and to in- crease the efficiency of experimentation. The value of statistics is realized when it is translated, taught and delivered with accessible computing environments to the scientists and analysts who use it.”
– John Sall
Executive Vice President and Co-Founder of SAS
Chief Architect, JMP
Connecting With Users
JMPer Cable was our primary means for communicating the most important information to our users. Now we have many, many channels including a variety of social media platforms, JMP Newswire, JMP Community, JMP Users Groups and JMP Days.
Making JMP
In October 1989, eight employees helped ship JMP 1 to seven customer sites. In 2019, the JMP family has grown to over 300 employees in more than 13 countries. Every January, all JMP employees come to SAS Headquarters for our annual kick-off meetings, which includes a group photo. Given our continued growth, we may not be able to fit in one picture next year!
JMP 1 shipped on two 3.5” floppy disks, included a 456-page printed manual, and required 1 MB RAM to run (though 2 MB was recommended).
JMP 15 is delivered as a 600 MB download, includes digital documentation exceeding 6,500 pages, and works best on a computer with 4 GB or more RAM.
Expanding Our Family
In 1989, there was just JMP… and just for the Mac. In 2019, there’s JMP for all! And the family of products keeps growing to include JMP Pro, JMP Clinical, JMP Genomics and JMP Live.
Telling Your Stories
For many years, JMP published articles and features in SASCOM, SAS’ corporate magazine. But the number of stories of users doing cool things with JMP continued to grow, so we decided to publish our own magazine. JMP Foreword debuted in 2008 with the release of JMP 8.
Meeting New Customers, Greeting Existing Ones
Tradeshows were as popular in the 1990s as they are today, giving attendees the chance to network and learn. Here’s a photo of Customer Care Manager Jeff Perkinson (ca. 1991) preparing to welcome tradeshow visitors. Of course, there are some shows we attend every year, like Joint Statistical Meeting.
Speaking Users' Languages
JMP 1 was only available in English. However, over the years we’ve invested in translating the software and documentation into multiple languages to share the magic of JMP around the world. Our user base has grown exponentially as JMP has become available in French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Italian and German.
Sharing Data and Knowledge
Floppy disks were the universal data format from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. They were initially used as a primary data storage mechanism and later as a file transfer system. Today, our data is stored in the cloud and our mobile phones have more power than the first computers. Now we easily disseminate our findings with others using JMP Public, an online platform for sharing interactive visualizations.
